Health Disparities the topic of Wednesday lecture at Creighton

Dr. Thomas LaVeist, Director of the Center for Disparities Solutions and the Richardson Professor in Health Policy at Johns Hopkins University, will speak at Creighton University on Wednesday.

LaVeist’s lecture is called “My Journey to Understand Why Health Disparities Exist and What to do about it.”

LaVeist says there is a lot of research that shows health disparities exist by race and ethnicity when it comes to quality of care, access to care, and patient outcomes.

He says he will also discuss the role economic status might play in generating race differences in health.

"Race differences are not caused by economic conditions.  And then we will also talk about access to healthcare and whether that’s what produces the race differences and health outcomes.  And talk about how there really are race differences even once you’ve accounted for socioeconomic status, biology and access to healthcare.”

LaVeist says he’ll discuss disparities in life expectancy as well as in rates of certain conditions, such as cancer and hypertension, among different ethnic groups.

LaVeist will speak at Creighton University’s Harper Center auditorium from Noon to 1:00 on Wednesday.  There is no charge to attend.
