Heartland B-Cycle to add up to 40 more bicycle-sharing stations

Heartland B-Cycle is planning for a significant expansion of its bicycle-sharing stations.

A $930,000 federal grant will pay for up to 40 new bike-sharing stations. They’ll be located within one block of bus stops. Ben Turner, program director for Heartland B-Cycle, says B-Cycle ridership continues to grow, particularly downtown and along the riverfront.

"In 2013, we added three stations downtown and saw our rides double. And then in 2014, we spent most of the year with 11 stations total, and we went from 2,000 rides to 6,500 rides. So we really have seen a large increase."

Heartland B-Cycle recently had a record-breaking weekend. B-Cycle just finished an expansion that began last fall. There are now 31 stations and 150 bicycles in the system.

Turner says Heartland B-Cycle hopes to have the new stations operational in 2016. He says at this point, they’re unsure exactly how many more bicycles will be added.
