Heartland Family Service receives more than a million in grant funding from UWM

Heartland Family Service recently received 1.2 million in grant money from the United Way of the Midlands.

John Jeanetta, Executive Director for Heartland Family Service, says this year’s process for applying for funds was different than in years past.

Jeanetta says this year the United Way created more of a competitive application process where any 501c3 could apply for funding.

He says funding was available in three different areas: safety programs, education programs and workforce development.

Jeanetta says the grant money will help fund nine different programs run through Heartland Family Service.

"There’s a program that helps refugee children be ready for kindergarten, called Ready in 5.  It included a concealed shelter and a full menu of services including advocates who respond to law enforcement when there is a domestic violence incident and they work with the victims and a crisis line people can call for help and classes to help those who abuse or are abused.”

Jeanetta says some of the other programs the funding will help include the North Omaha and Sarpy County Hardship Assistance and the Positive Parenting Group.
