Heartland Workers Center holds first South Omaha Latino Political Convention Sunday

The Heartland Workers Center will hold its first South Omaha Latino Political Convention this weekend.

Sergio Sosa, Executive Director of HWC, says people from eight precincts in South Omaha, Ward 4 have organized and conducted a community assessment.

Sosa says 650 surveys were collected from eight out of 18 precincts in Ward 4.

He says delegates chosen by leaders in the community will release the findings from the community assessment at Sunday’s convention.

"But also it will be an opportunity for political officials and candidates to react to what are the people’s needs and issues that will be addressed next year for the 2016 elections.”

Sosa says he hopes the convention will encourage civic engagement all year round, and not just during an election year.

The convention, “Our Stories, Our Voices: Recreating Social Fabrics and Networks” takes place Sunday at the Livestock Exchange Building, 4920 S. 30th Street, 10th Floor, from 3-5:30 p.m.
