Holiday cards, letters wanted for American Red Cross program

By Katie Knapp Schubert

Omaha, NE – The American Red Cross Heartland Chapter is participating in a program that gives Christmas cards and letters to service members, veterans, and their families.

The program is called Holiday Mail for Heroes. Last year the American Red Cross distributed one million cards and letters to service members in the U.S. and overseas. 31,000 of those cards were submitted locally.

Dena Howard is the Heartland Chapter's Service to Armed Forces Director. She says this year, any cards and letters received at the local chapter will go to service members and veterans in the Omaha metro. Red Cross volunteers also plan to post cards and letters at guard reserve units and recruiting offices in the area.

Anyone wanting to send a holiday card or letter through the Holiday Mail for Heroes program can do so until December 7. No additional items should be included with the card or letter.
