DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa House has approved a bill that would require state educators to provide schools with information on radon safety and encourage them to test for the gas.
Lawmakers voted Tuesday 99-1 in favor of the measure. It now returns to the Senate for final consideration.
The bill originally required schools to test for radon and create a mitigation plan if the colorless and odorless gas exceeded recommended safety levels.
The House's bill instead focuses on education about radon safety. Schools would report to the state Department of Education about how they're practicing radon safety.
Rep. Matt Windschitl, a Republican from Missouri Valley, says the legislation is a good first step for schools to understand what the risks might be.
