Johanns' Legislation Would Help Veterans

The Haven Act would create public-private partnerships with organizations dedicated to addressing the housing needs of our nation’s veterans.

In his weekly conference call with Nebraska media, US Senator Mike Johanns said with the growing number of veterans with disabilities, there’s a pressing need to help our military heroes with needed home modifications and repairs.

He said we need to ensure that veterans have a safe and suitable home when they come back.

"So Senator Jack Reed of Rhode Island and I are working on legislation to help disabled and low income veterans with the necessary retrofits and repairs to keep them in their homes and out of more expensive institutional care.”

Senator Johanns said modifications might include things like adding a wheelchair ramp to the front door area or widening sidewalks.

He said the Haven Act is just a way for the nation to show veterans their service and sacrifices are appreciated.
