OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A judge says a man accused of killing four people in Omaha last summer can defend himself at trial.
The Omaha-World Herald reports (http://bit.ly/1qDwsFE) that Douglas County Judge Peter Batallion granted Nikko Jenkins' request to act as his own attorney Friday.
Batallion warned Jenkins that defending himself "would be very difficult for any lawyer" and that he could be represented by Douglas County Public Defender Tom Riley, one of the best defense attorneys in Nebraska.
Jenkins says he undestands the risks, but that he is "intellectually able to represent myself." He'll receive advice from a public defender, and be allowed to access video evidence of police interviews.
Jenkins is charged with four counts of first-degree murder in the August deaths of Juan Uribe-Pena, Jorge Cajiga-Ruiz, Curtis Bradford and Andrea Kruger.
