LAST CALL CD OF THE MONTH: Peter Erskine and the Dr. Um Band/Second Opinion/Fuzzy Music

Second Opinion is the latest recording from jazz drummer Peter Erskine, returning with his Dr. Um Band. And this new recording of nine selections is fueled by the classic fusion sound of bands such as Weather Report (where Erskine was a drummer for several years), among many other well-known bands and jazz artists in a career that runs several decades.

With reedman Bob Sheppard, Benjamin Sheppard on bass, and John Beasley on keyboards, the master drummer and his band present a brilliant date. From the opener, "Hipnotherapy" to "Solar Steps", a mix of originals are presented in an engaging fashion. They are accompanied by creative performances of classics "Dreamsville", "Willow Weep For Me" and "Street of Dreams". Altogether nine selections comprise the date, which was recently released on Fuzzy Music. It follows the excellent recording from Erskine and his associates from last year, "Dr. Um" which will be of interest to listeners who find this recording enjoyable. Last Call fans will relish the choices made by Peter Erskine and his band on this new effort.

Peter Erskine is one of the foremost jazz drummers of our time. He has worked with many of the most widely acclaimed jazz bands of the genre including  Stan Kenton, Maynard Ferguson, and the Bob Mintzer Big Band, in addition to his acclaimed work with Weather Report. He is a much in demand sideman and has worked with  Diana Krall, Eliane Elias, Linda Ronstadt, as well as Joe Farrell and Gary Burton. Erskine is also a professor at the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California. He has written several books about drumming and has released an instructional DVD.
