Last Call to present Eric Dolphy recording
The adventuresome Out There recorded 46 years ago this month
By Chris Cooke
Omaha, Nebraska – On Saturday night's Last Call..host Chris Cooke will present music that still pushes the outside of the envelope...46 years after it was recorded.
Eric Dolphy's Out There is a stunning statement from a reedman who was exploring the frontiers of jazz with confidence.
Dolphy, on alto saxophone, flute, B-Flat and bass clarinets is joined by Ron Carter on cello, George Duvivier on bass and Roy Haynes on drums.
The selections are brief in length, yet powerful. Highlights include the title track, a cover of Charles Mingus's Eclipse and the riveting Feathers, where Dolphy's haunting saxophone wails above a subdued rhythm section, suggesting a late night flight by a bird somewhere over the urban landscape.
Join Chris Cooke on the Last Call Saturday night at 11pm for music from Eric Dolphy.
Chris Cooke has been the host of Last Call on KIOS since 1996.
