Lawmakers to debate testing Nebraska students about civics

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A bill that would require Nebraska students to complete a naturalization test is headed to the floor of the Legislature for debate.

Lawmakers took the rare step Thursday of pulling the measure from the Education Committee, where it had stalled because of a lack of support.

Sen. Lydia Brasch of Bancroft says her measure would ensure students have a basic knowledge about their country and government.

Supporters say many Americans lack a basic knowledge about the country. They say students need a strong understanding of government and history to become future leaders.

Opponents say the bill focuses on testing instead of engaging students and creates additional responsibility for schools without extra funding.

Lawmakers advanced the measure to a full debate on a 27-13 vote.
