Legislative setback not affecting Royals' decision to relocate

By Katie Knapp

Omaha, NE – The Vice President and General Manager of the Omaha Royals says they still plan to move to Sarpy County.

Martie Cordaro's comments came Monday. Last week, Senator Abbie Cornett announced that her legislation won't be taken up this session in the Unicameral. That bill would provide funding mechanisms for Sarpy County to pay for a new stadium. Senator Cornett says the legislation could still be heard next year.

Cordaro says the Royals made their decision last November when they entered in to a Memorandum of Understanding with Sarpy County. Commissioners approved a 25-year Stadium Use and Lease Agreement with the Royals in March.

He adds that the Royals are moving forward with Sarpy County to select a site. Sites in Bellevue, Papillion and La Vista are under consideration. Commissioners have until June first to select a site.
