Legislative staffer chosen for new corrections watchdog job

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A legislative staffer who helped investigate Nebraska's corrections department will now serve as an official state watchdog for the agency.

State Ombudsman Marshall Lux announced Thursday that Doug Koebernick has been chosen as the new inspector general for the Nebraska correctional system. The job was created as part of a prison reform law approved earlier this year.

Koebernick was a key staffer for the Nebraska Legislature's special committee that investigated problems in the corrections department. His duties included reviewing thousands of pages of documents that the committee received as part of its investigation of sentencing miscalculations, the handling of Nikko Jenkins and other problems.

Koebernick has worked for former state Sens. Nancy Thompson, Ray Janssen and Steve Lathrop, and current state Sen. Burke Harr.
