Letterpress Exhibits Open UNO Art Gallery's 2016 Calendar

UNO is presenting two exhibits meant to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Harry Duncan’s birth.

Denise Brady, Gallery Coordinator for UNO, says Duncan taught letterpress at UNO for 15 years in the 70s and 80s, and retired from teaching here.

Brady says work from Duncan’s students is on view in the Criss Library.

She says the exhibit in the UNO Art Gallery highlights several of the books Duncan printed, many while he was at the university.

It also features books from his students, many of whom went on to found literary fine presses and to publish literature.

"The centerpiece of the show is the work of Juan Pascoe, who learned printing from Harry in the 70s in West Branch, Iowa and went on to found a press in Mexico.  And he’s gone on to publish and print by hand using this antiquated technique, letterpress.”

Letterpress is the process of picking up pieces of metal with letters carved into the ends of them and setting them into text.

Brady says letterpress is the form of printing that’s been used since the 15th century and is also commonly referred to as moveable type.

The letterpress exhibits are both on view through February 11th.  For more information, go to unomaha.edu.
