Lights on Afterschool Event Set for Next Week

Collective for Youth is presenting Lights On Afterschool, a project of the Afterschool Alliance, on Saturday, October 19th at UNO’s Sapp Fieldhouse.

Jaqueline Rief, Omaha Serves Education Initiatives Vista, says Lights On Afterschool is a community-wide event with a two-fold purpose.

First, the event is meant to bring in public and elected officials to create an awareness of the importance of afterschool programs.

Rief says there will be parent and youth testimonials that spotlight what these programs mean in their lives.

She says the other part of the event highlights afterschool programs and providers that already do these activities in the schools.

"So we have a large focus on STEM-related activities and different organizations are doing science experiments.  Some are doing things related with fire.  The Strategic Air and Space Museum is bringing in Earth in a planetarium. We have other activities like art.  And the African Culture Connection is bringing in drumming.”

Lights On Afterschool takes place Saturday, October 19th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Sapp Fieldhouse on the UNO campus.  There is no fee to attend.
