Lincoln recognized as a Smart Gigabit Community

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Lincoln has been designated as a Smart Gigabit Community.

The Lincoln Journal Star reports that the designation comes from technology nonprofit U.S. Ignite Inc. and makes Lincoln one of about 30 communities nationwide. Such communities must partner with universities, nonprofits, telecommunications providers and others and commit to developing two gigabit applications annually.

Lincoln is collaborating with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Allo Communications and Fuse Co-working. David Young is the city's fiber, infrastructure and right-of-way manager. He says the city's first project is to develop software to create a citywide gigabit wireless network to allow radios to both broadcast on and listen to multiple frequencies.

The program is funded by the National Science Foundation.
