Local After School Program Nationally Recognized

An Omaha based youth program was recently recognized by First Lady Michelle Obama with a national art and humanities youth program award.

The African Culture Connectionaccepted its award at a ceremony in Washington DC.  The after-school program was selected from 350 nominees and was one of 12 award winners.

Charles Ahovissi, Artistic Director of the African Culture Connection, says the group’s mission is to transform young people’s negative perceptions of Africa.

"There is a need of global understanding in our community so the more diverse population we have in our community, the more cultural education is needed in our community.”

Ahovissi says the African Culture Connection is made up of professional teachers and artists.

They perform and promote African history and culture through traditional African dance, drumming, and visual arts.
