Man dies after disturbance, officer-involved shooting

A news conference is scheduled for Wednesday morning to discuss an officer-involved shooting Tuesday that left one person dead.

31-year-old Tyree Bell died at Alegent Creighton Hospital after he was shot multiple times. Omaha Police were called to 3727 North 42nd Street, just north of Pratt, at 4:11 am Tuesday, for a report of an armed disturbance. There, police say they found a man who was armed with a shotgun, holding a small child, and making threatening and suicidal statements. Police began negotiations with the suspect.

Rescue squads arrived at the scene about two hours later after police say the situation deteriorated. A news release from OPD says at least four officers fired their guns during negotiations with Bell. Bell was critically injured and died shortly after he arrived at the hospital.

The officers are on paid administrative leave while the shooting is under investigation.

Chief Todd Schmaderer will discuss the shooting and more information about the officers involved at Wednesday's news conference. It begins at 10am.
