May is Bicycle Safety Month

By Katie Knapp

Omaha, NE – Iowa is Bicycle Safety Month and that state's Department of Transportation is encouraging more people to ride their bicycles to work.

The Department of Transportation is promoting the benefits of riding your bicycle instead of driving to work. Milly Ortiz, bicycle and pedestrian coordinator, says riding your bicycle to work benefits your health and the environment. She says it's also a smart choice given the rising gas prices.

Next week is Bike to Work Week in Iowa. Ortiz says more and more Iowa cities are becoming bicycle friendly. The Iowa Department of Transportation says there are more than 1,000 miles of trails in the state. They include the Iowa Riverfront, Lake Manawa, and Wabash Trace trails.

Ortiz says if you do plan to ride your bike to work, you should follow safety rules, ride a helmet, and look out for drivers.
