Mayor of Nebraska City resigns with blast at City Council

NEBRASKA CITY, Neb. (AP) — The mayor of Nebraska City has resigned, saying he'd been undermined by some members of the City Council.

Jack Hobbie quit Thursday morning after 6½ years in the post. He said his resignation "is primarily due to a lack of respect and communication with me as the mayor."

He complained that he was blindsided in December when the City Council voted to not reappoint city administrator Joe Johnson and city clerk-treasurer Arnold Ehlers. Hobbie says he was blindsided again earlier this month when two of the commissioners tried, without his knowledge, to hire an interim city clerk-treasurer.

The mayor and the commissioners of finance, public works, streets and parks act as the five-member City Council.

The city of around 7,300 people is in southeast Nebraska.
