Mayor's Day of Recognition

The U.S. Conference of Mayors celebrated volunteerism on Tuesday.

Omaha Mayor Jim Suttle says 250 people came out to support everything from the Boy Scouts to Habitat for Humanity.

He says 3 ½ years ago, Omaha was one of 10 cities that received a national grant for City Serves.

The purpose of the program was to generate a database of more than 3,000 volunteers.  He says the database is then used by organizations to find volunteers.

"I’ve always felt that the art of living is the art of giving and so if you’re a member of the community that you’re living in, then you need to share back by saying, ‘I am going to be giving to my community.’”

Mayor Suttle says those who are interested in volunteering should call 402- 444-5000 and ask for Craig Howe.
