The "Memphis Belle" Arrives July 5th

The famous Boeing B-17 known as the “Memphis Belle” will be open for flights to the public on Saturday, July 5th at Council Bluffs Municipal Airport.

Scott Maher is with the Liberty Foundation

He says the group is doing a 50 city national Salute to Veterans Tour with three goals in mind:  to honor veterans, to preserve aviation history and to teach future generations about the high price of freedom.

Maher says the tour has already been to more than a dozen cities and seems to be engaging for all ages.

"It’s veterans coming out and they’re 20 years old all over again when they’re on board.  And it’s family members coming out to get a better understanding of what dad and grandpa did.  What I hear the most is that it’s hands-on history.  It’s our heritage not in moth balls or the pages of a dusty book.”

The “Memphis Belle” will be open for flights to the public on July 5th every hour on the hour, from 10:00 to 2:00.

Maher says there will also be ground tours of the aircraft that day from 2:30 to sunset.
