Metro receives grant to enhance College Success Navigator program

Metropolitan Community College recently received a $25,000 grant from the United Way of the Midlands which will help enhance its College Success Navigators program.

Lisa Goodwin, Executive Director of the Career and Academic Skills Center, says the program provides students with academic support to help them achieve their goals.

She says this includes things like mentorship, study groups and group activities.

Goodwin says in its third year, the program is showing success in student retention rates.

"The program is a partnership with the Avenue Scholars Foundation and the AKSARBEN Foundation.  And they’re providing a scholarship, up to $8,000 for a three-year period.  And it’s a program to help low to moderate income students transition from high school to college.  And then when they come to Metro, the have a college success navigator that assists them through the whole process.”

Goodwin says at any one time, each College Success Navigator is assisting 50 or more students.
