Metro's trucking program's new six-week layout to help fill driver shortage

Metropolitan Community College’s CDL Class-A Truck Driving Program now takes just six weeks to complete.

Previously, the class had been offered over an eight-week period.  The high demand for truck drivers prompted Metro to shorten the program so they can help get students graduated and employed faster.

Darryl Partner, CDL Instructor at Metro, says the two week difference may not seem like a lot but if you’re underemployed or unemployed, those two weeks can be difficult.

Partner says if you’re not technologically savvy you may be starting off a bit behind in the program.

"Most of the trucks come equipped with hands-free GPS systems that offer spoken, turn-by-turn directions.  Pretty much the days of only using paper for everything are over.  Several trucking companies now rather than have drivers take a piece of paper and take it to a truck stop and physically scan that with a fax machine, Now they’ve got mobile apps on smartphones where truck drivers can take a picture of it and send it to the company that way."

Partner says Metro offers the CDL Class-A Truck Driving Program two times a quarter.  The next class begins November 10th
