Millard Public Schools awarded federal grant for extra security

By Katie Knapp Schubert

Omaha, NE – The Millard Public Schools have received a $50,000 dollar grant to improve security following January's shooting.

The grant is from the U.S. Department of Education's Project School Emergency Response to Violence program. Millard Public Schools spokeswoman Amy Friedman says the grant is paying for additional police presence at the three high schools. "They assist the school resource officers that are already in our high schools, and their purpose is to really reassure the community. We know we have safe schools but this just provides another layer of security."

Former Millard South Assistant Principal Vicky Kaspar was shot and killed in the school's office January fifth by a 17-year-old former student. Principal Curtis Case was seriously injured. The student committed suicide.

The additional security will be present at Millard's high schools through the end of the school year.
