Mills County under a disaster declaration

By Cheril Lee

Omaha, NE – Mills County is currently under a disaster declaration, which means the county could see severe flooding.

Sheri Bowen is the PIO for Mills County. She says Mills County has no mandatory evacuation orders at this time. Bowen says the levee system is being monitored continuously by experts from levee and drainage districts as well as the Army Corps of Engineers. She says the county's number one concern is the safety of its residents, "We have just requested the assistance of the Iowa National Guard to help us with evaluation and security of our 26 miles of Mills County levees. So they will be starting tomorrow with some 24/7 patrolling of our area here along those levees. They are going to be helping with security and then they've also been trained to report any unusual things they may note about the levee system."

Bowen says prevention measures are being taken in multiple areas in Mills County. The City of Glenwood is implementing mitigation and protection efforts with their city water plant. Additionally, Pacific Junction is continuing to fill sandbags and stage those for possible placement. Bowen says anyone who has questions or needs assistance may call 712-527-4231.
