National Veterans Wheelchair Games underway

By Katie Knapp

Omaha, NE – More than 500 athletes are in Omaha for the National Veterans Wheelchair Games.

The Games began Friday and continue through Tuesday at Qwest Center Omaha, UNO, Northwest High School and other locations. Disabled military veterans from throughout the United States, Puerto Rico and Great Britain are competing in 17 events, including basketball, swimming, softball, and track.

Events also include a Kids Day, where disabled children in Omaha will be mentored by the athletes and participate in events of their own.

Will Ackerman, Spokesman for the VA of Nebraska and Western Iowa, says the Games are rehabilitative for the Veterans. They're also a chance for Veterans to gather and enjoy the camaraderie of sports.

Ackerman says the public is encouraged to attend the events and support the athletes.
