Nebraska AFL-CIO: Employee Free Choice Act needed

By Katie Knapp

Omaha, NE – The Nebraska AFL-CIO says the Employee Free Choice Act is necessary to help small businesses grow.

AFL-CIO leaders and two small business owners held a forum Thursday in Omaha about the EFCA. Supporters, including the AFL-CIO, say the act will make it easier for workers to unionize. Opponents say the bill could devastate businesses.

Nebraska AFL-CIO President Ken Mass says there's a misconception that the EFCA would take away the secret ballot. He says that's not true workers wanting to unionize could do so either by card check or secret ballot.

Mass says the EFCA doesn't have much support from Nebraska's lawmakers. The Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce is opposed to the legislation.
