Nebraska authorities warn about storm repair scams

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska homeowners are being urged to be careful about hiring contractors to repair damage from recent storms.

The state attorney general's office warns that con artists and criminals often show up after storms to try to take advantage of homeowners.

The key is watching for warning signs and diligently checking out contractors before hiring them.

The attorney general's office recommends checking references, being leery of door-to-door salesmen, never paying cash and refusing to pay in full up front.

It's also wise to get written contracts with estimates of when work will be complete, and always get at least two bids before hiring a contractor.
