Nebraska corrections director speaks at January forum

Omaha, NE – Nebraska Corrections Director Robert Houston was the featured speaker at the Omaha Press Club's January forum. Houston says he supports a possible merger of the Omaha City Jail and the Douglas County Correctional Center, because doing so would provide services that Omaha doesn't have the resources for now. Houston says the Omaha City Jail has good employees, but there isn't constant supervision of inmates, which is the key component a merger could provide. He also says overcrowding is the biggest issue facing Nebraska's prison system over the next few years. Right now Nebraska's prisons are are 138 percent of capacity. He says when the population reaches 150 to 155 percent, there's a saturation point at which safety is compromised.
