Nebraska education officials launch Virtual Scholars program

By Katie Knapp Schubert

Omaha, NE – Nebraska education officials plan to launch a virtual high school program this year.

The Nebraska Virtual Scholars program will accept 50 students this school year through a competitive process. Those students will have access to all courses offered through Nebraska's independent study high school. Education commissioner Roger Breed says the program brings updated technology to Nebraska's education system.

All students and teachers will be able to access the virtual high school through a website set up by the University of Nebraska. University president J.B. Milliken says the virtual high school means all Nebraska students can take a variety of classes.

Officials hope to develop a funding system for the virtual high school that doesn't require students to pay tuition. The University of Nebraska is paying for the program the first year.
