Nebraska governor candidates clash in debate

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska's candidates for governor are accusing one another of supporting proposals that could have hurt farmers.Republican Pete Ricketts and Chuck Hassebrook clashed Thursday in what could be their final debate of the race.

Ricketts accused Hassebrook of supporting restrictions on farm exports. He pointed to a 1990 paper that Hassebrook co-authored, "Biotechnology's Bitter Harvest," which argued against genetically modified crops. Hassebrook says he only wrote a few paragraphs of the report and didn't approve its recommendations.

Hassebrook pointed to Ricketts' ties to the Platte Institute, a conservative think tank which advocated for an income tax proposal last year that could have ended sales tax exemptions for farmers.

Ricketts, the Platte Institute's founder, says he doesn't agree with all of the group's recommendations. He says he never supported the legislation.
