LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Getting a marriage license in Nebraska could cost an extra $10 under a bill advanced by lawmakers.
The measure won first-round approval Tuesday with a 32-7 vote, after hours of legislative debate. Sen. Ernie Chambers of Omaha and other opponents criticized the proposal as a tax increase that hits poor people the hardest.
The measure would raise the cost of marriage licenses issued by counties from the current $15 to $25. The original proposal would have increased the cost to $50, but the amount was lowered as part of a compromise.
The measure's sponsor, Sen. Kathy Campbell of Lincoln, says the current fee doesn't cover processing costs for counties.
