Nebraska lawmakers confirm new behavioral health director

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska lawmakers have confirmed a new director for the state's behavioral health division.

Senators voted 36-0 on Tuesday in favor of Sheri Dawson, a registered nurse appointed by Gov. Pete Ricketts in August. The Division of Behavioral Health includes a central office in Lincoln and three regional centers in Lincoln, Norfolk and Hastings.

Lawmakers say they'll be watching the division closely to see whether its leaders actively work to address the lack of mental and behavioral services throughout the state. Sen. Bob Krist of Omaha says the services have been neglected in past years.

Sen. Paul Schumacher of Columbus says he hopes Dawson will ask for resources when the agency needs them.

Dawson previously served as the division's acting director in addition to a variety of other roles.
