LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The horse racing industry is dismissing an anti-gambling group's allegations that the industry wants to stop live horse racing during a hearing on horse racing bills.
The Legislature's General Affairs Committee heard several bills on Monday that the horse racing industry says would help local horse racing facilities bring in more money.
Horsemen's Benevolent & Protective Association executive director Lynne Schuller says the horsemen want nothing more than to hold more live races, but they can't afford it.
Omaha Sen. Scott Lautenbaugh has proposed a bill and a constitutional amendment that would allow state race tracks to install machines that allow betting on old horse races. The races are displayed on machines that look like video lottery terminals.
Last year, Gov. Dave Heineman vetoed a similar proposal.
