Nebraska lawmakers override some of Gov. Heineman's budget vetoes

Lawmakers voted Tuesday to override about $14.5 million of Governor Dave Heineman’s line-item vetoes to the state budget.

Heineman vetoed several items -- amounting to $44.6 million -- from the budget bills passed by the legislature, of which $7.8 million was general fund spending. Among the vetoes were $28 million in state and federal funds to replace the Medicaid Management Information System, and $129,000 in state and federal funds for the Foster Care Review office to increase staffing.

The Appropriations Committee ultimately decided to challenge 10 of 23 vetoes, including $450,000 in aid to the Omaha-area Learning Community and $3 million for University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Nursing facility in Lincoln.

Senators successfully overrode all of the vetoes challenged by the Appropriations Committee.
