Nebraska legislative session adjourns

The Nebraska Legislature has adjourned one week ahead of schedule.

The first year of the biennial session was marked by action on big issues, including the death penalty, and drivers’ licenses for youth brought to the U.S. illegally as children.

Governor Pete Ricketts says lawmakers addressed his priorities of cutting government growth and passing tax reform.

“Working together, we provided $128 million of additional property tax relief through the Property Tax Credit Relief Fund. This is direct relief, from the state to all property owners, and for the next biennium will mean $408 million of property tax relief.”

The Unicameral also approved a gas tax increase, and signed off on an $8.7 billion two-year budget. Ricketts told lawmakers he wants additional tax reform measures passed next year.

On Friday, they also passed a resolution expressing sympathy and support for the family of fallen Omaha Police Officer Kerrie Orozco.
