Nebraska picks nominees in presidential, congressional races

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska Republican voters have chosen their candidate for an Omaha-based congressional race and endorsed Donald Trump as their presidential nominee despite widespread opposition.

Retired Brig. Gen. Don Bacon won the GOP nomination Tuesday to face Democratic U.S. Rep. Brad Ashford in November. Ashford is serving his first term in the 2nd congressional district. Bacon easily defeated Chip Maxwell, a former Nebraska state lawmaker and Douglas County commissioner.

Trump added Nebraska to his list of primary victories, but only won about 60 percent of the vote even though all of his GOP rivals have bowed out of the race. U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas claimed nearly 20 percent support.

Several Democratic and moderate Republican lawmakers also appear to face serious general election threats based on the primary results.
