Nebraska ranked as second most affordable vacation spot

By Katie Knapp

Omaha, NE – Nebraska tourism officials don't expect high gas prices to deter travelers from vacationing in the Cornhusker State this summer.

A new report by AAA ranks Nebraska as the second most affordable vacation spot in the United States, behind North Dakota. Sarah Baker, spokeswoman for the Nebraska Division of Travel and Tourism, says tourists are better able to handle higher gas prices when they visit an affordable vacation spot.

Aside from the affordability factor, Baker says Nebraska's diversity and variety of attractions make the state a good vacation spot. The state's third-largest source of revenue from outside the state is tourism. The Division of Travel and Tourism says travelers spent more than three billion dollars in Nebraska in 2006.

The AAA report ranks Iowa fourth in the top five most affordable vacation spots.
