Nebraska recovering from 2012-13 drought, report says

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A new state report says Nebraska groundwater is recovering from the drought that ran from early 2012 through summer 2013.

The report released Friday says that from spring 2014 to spring 2015, groundwater levels began to rise after significant declines during the drought. Experts credit the increases to higher-than-normal precipitation for much of the state and better water-use practices. Many parts of the state remain below 2012 levels.

Eastern Nebraska had some of the biggest increases, with some well levels rising 15 feet.

The data were collected in late March and early April 2015 and don't reflect some of the record-setting precipitation that fell in eastern Nebraska in spring and summer 2015.

The 2015 Nebraska Statewide Groundwater-Level Monitoring Report was produced by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's School of Natural Resources.
