Nebraska senators fail to vote on lobbyist meal ban

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska lawmakers can keep eating lunches and dinners paid for by lobbyists, at least for now.

A proposed meal ban stalled in the Legislature on Wednesday before senators could vote on it. Senator Ernie Chambers says he introduced the resolution to stop his colleagues from "mooching" and "sponging" off of lobbyists.

Speaker of the Legislature Galen Hadley had allowed 30 minutes of debate for each of the day's resolutions. Chambers says he assumed senators would vote after that time was up, but instead, lawmakers moved on to the next resolution without voting.

Chambers says he plans to introduce the ban next year as a bill, forcing senators to go on record.

The resolution would have applied to meals at the Capitol during legislative sessions.

The measure is LR414.
