Nebraska State Patrol advises caution on snowy roadways

The Nebraska State Patrol says using caution is key when traveling during winter weather.

More than a foot of snow is possible in some parts of Nebraska from a winter storm moving through the state. Nebraska State Patrol spokeswoman Deb Collins says if you must travel Friday evening or Saturday, watch your speed and don’t use your cruise control. “Allow extra distance to react to others around you, increase that following distance, make sure you have plenty of time to react to what might happen in front of you. Be sure to exercise caution on bridges and overpasses, those are areas that seem to get slick surfaces faster than others.”

Collins recommends keeping an emergency kit in your vehicle. If you become stranded, Collins says you should stay with your vehicle.

You can check winter road conditions at www.511.nebraska.gov and at www.511ia.org. Omaha Public Works has 90 trucks ready to respond to Friday evening’s snow event.
