Nebraska Workforce Index declines in second quarter

By Katie Knapp Schubert

Omaha, NE – A new report shows some area employers are looking to hire more workers.

The AIM Institute and Creighton College of Business compile the Nebraska Workforce Index. It compares the number of job seekers to the number of available jobs. During the second quarter, the index dropped from 1.84 to 1.69. AIM Vice President Adam Hader says the transportation, manufacturing, and construction industries were among five sectors that planned to hire the most employees. He says those industries are key indicators of economic health.

Hader expects the trend to continue in to the third and fourth quarters of this year. A workforce index above one means there are more job seekers than jobs available.

Nebraska's unemployment rate is 4.8 percent.
