Nebraskans called on to help build homes for poor families in Guatemala

By Katie Knapp Schubert

Omaha, NE – An organization providing housing for Guatemalans hopes Nebraskans will help with their efforts.

Carolina van Heerde founded Constru Casa five years ago while living in Guatemala. Each year, the organization builds about 75 homes for families living in extreme poverty. Each home costs $3,500. In Constru Casa's five-year history, 320 homes have been built.

Van Heerde says she works with social organizations providing health care and education to select the families, something she calls a difficult process. The selected families help to build their houses. She spent this week in Lincoln talking about her group, its mission, and how to get involved. Van Heerde says Constru Casa needs donations, volunteers, and program ambassadors.
