A New Initiative Focuses on Inspiring Young Women to Pursue Careers in Orthopedics, Engineering

40 young women have been chosen to attend thePerry Outreach Program on November 15th at UNMC.

Dr. Lori Reed is a foot and ankle surgeon and associate professor of orthopedic surgery at UNMC.

She says the idea is to introduce female high school students to careers in engineering and orthopedic surgery at an early age.

Dr. Reed says statistics show about 5-7% of orthopedic surgeons are female.  Reed says the daylong event includes lectures and labs.

"Morning of they get a talk from one of the female engineers which is based on social interest, personal type things.  How all of us got interested in the fields we are interested in.  So the morning is a talk by one of the female engineers and then there are six labs.”

Reed says labs will focus on performing surgical simulations, fixing a broken leg and repairing knee ligaments.  For more information, the website is perryinitiative.org.
