New Iowa caucus count shows Santorum with 34 vote lead

By Sarah McCammon, Iowa Public Radio

Des Moines, IA – The Des Moines Register is reporting that a new count of the Iowa caucus results shows former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum coming out on top. But questions remain about the results.

The certified count gives Santorum 29,839 votes, with 29,805 former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney.

That puts Santorum 34 votes ahead. Romney was declared the winner by eight votes in the early-morning hours following caucus night.

Republican Party of Iowa officials say results from eight precincts are missing, however, and they're calling the race a "split decision." Officials told the Register the results from those precincts will never be recovered and certified.

Wednesday at 5 PM was the deadline for volunteers to turn in their official paperwork from the January 3rd caucuses to party headquarters in Des Moines.
