New law allows online voter registration in Nebraska

Governor Dave Heineman has signed in to law a bill that will allow Nebraskans to register online to vote.

Nebraska joins 17 other states that let people register to vote, or update their voter registration, online. Governor Heineman says it modernizes the voter registration process.

"The bill requires Secretary Gale to develop and implement a statewide voter registration process on or before July first, 2015, to register to vote and to update voter registration records electronically through a central website that is maintained by his office."

The voter registrations will incorporate signatures on file with the Department of Motor Vehicles.  Secretary of State John Gale says the process will also mean less paper for the DMV when handling voter registrations in their offices.
