New middle school to carry name of Tuskegee Airman

A new middle school in Omaha will bear the name of a 1937 Tech High School graduate and Tuskegee Airman.

The OPS board Monday night approved naming the new school at 132nd and State Streets Alfonza W. Davis Middle School. Davis enlisted in the Army in 1941 and was the first African-American aviator from Omaha to earn his officer commission and pilot’s wings. Davis died in combat in 1944.

Davis Middle School’s mascot will be the Aviators. The name was chosen by a nine-member committee and the votes of fifth grade students at Saddlebrook and Prairie Wind schools.
