New online program seeks to streamline criminal background check process

Nebraskans have a new way of doing name-only criminal background checks.

The Nebraska State Patrol and Governor Dave Heineman announced Monday morning that an online system is now available for those checks. It’s an effort to streamline the process. Governor Heineman says 33,000 such requests were made in 2012. Getting those requests back could sometimes take more than a week.

The online system is available by logging on to statepatrol.nebraska.gov and clicking on “Online Criminal History Requests.” It’s a four-step online process to get the criminal background check information.

Requests with no criminal history are returned immediately. Those with criminal information history will be returned within 3 days.
