NMC officials say Ebola patient's condition continuing to improve

Nebraska Medical Center officials say the condition of a NBC cameraman with Ebola continues to improve.

33-year-old Ashoka Mukpo arrived at NMC last week, and is being treated in the biocontainment unit. He contracted Ebola while working in Liberia.

NMC officials say Mukpo is responding well to treatment. He received an experimental drug called brincidofovir, as well as a blood transfusion from Dr. Kent Brantly. Brantly survived Ebola after being treated at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta.

On Sunday, the CDC announced that a nurse in Dallas tested positive for Ebola after treating Thomas Duncan, a Liberian man who died from the disease last week. Nebraska Medical Center doctors say all hospitals need to prepare for the possibility of receiving Ebola patients. There are four biocontainment units nationwide. NMC's is the largest.

Mukpo is the fifth American to be treated at a U.S. hospital after contracting Ebola, and the second to undergo treatment at Nebraska Medical Center. Dr. Rick Sacra spent nearly three weeks in the biocontainment unit last month.
